Cookie policy

Essential storage, explained

The Outsight Labs website and Tell plugins do not add advertising cookies, analytics trackers, third-party video embeds or external font requests. Storage supports requested features such as signing in and remembering game preferences. The cookie notice is information about that storage, not permission to track you.

1. Cookies and browser storage

Cookies are small records saved by a browser. Local storage keeps information on your device until it is removed. Both can support website features. Our privacy policy explains information stored on the server, including your email and game progress.

2. What the current plugins use

Storage used by the website and Tell
Name or typePurposeDuration
tell_challenge cookieBinds a requested Tell login code to the browser requesting it. Essential sign-in security; Secure, HttpOnly and SameSite=Lax.Ten minutes.
wordpress_logged_in_* and related authentication cookiesKeep a requested account session signed in. Essential authentication; signing out ends the session. Cookie names vary by installation.Normally the browser session, with server-side session validity generally up to two days; remembered login sessions from the administration login can last longer under site settings.
osl_cookie_info_v1 local storageRemembers that you dismissed the cookie information notice. It does not identify an account or enable tracking.Remembered for six months, after which the notice is shown again; the record is removed or refreshed on a subsequent visit.
tell_school_pupil_… cookieNecessary school pupil authentication; stores an opaque session token, not a pupil name or code. The precise cookie name follows the installed school authentication code.Persistent cookie with an eight-hour expiry; server checks an eight-hour maximum and a 30-minute idle timeout. Sign-out and code replacement revoke access.
tell_reading_preferences_v1 local storageRemembers text size, colours and reduced animation when you request a change using Aa. No account ID or analytics purpose.Until reset in Aa or site data is cleared. Shared browsers retain the previous user’s choices.

Apart from requested reading choices, Tell currently keeps device game preferences in memory during play and saves account progress on the server. Administrators and other existing website features may use additional cookies, such as login-test or administration preference cookies. Cookie names and durations can also be affected by WordPress configuration, hosting and other plugins.

3. Your choices

You can read this page at any time or reopen the notice with the button below. You can sign out of Tell, change game preferences or delete cookies and site data in your browser. Blocking authentication cookies can prevent sign-in; clearing local storage may reset device preferences. Removing a Home Screen shortcut does not itself delete a Tell account.

4. Optional tracking

The bundled website and Tell plugins do not offer optional analytics or advertising categories, so there is no “accept all” tracking switch. If optional tracking or embeds are added, the operator must update this information and provide appropriate controls before those technologies run. This notice does not block scripts installed by a different plugin or by the hosting provider.

School and teacher security

WordPress and Wordfence may use authentication, login-test, two-factor and security cookies for invited teachers. Their actual names and lifetimes depend on the installed security settings. School pupils use a separate authentication cookie with an eight-hour expiry. Security and hosting providers may also process technical logs. The standalone Tell Public pages and school pupil game block remote scripts, frames and network connections through a same-origin content security policy; this does not audit or remove trackers on other website pages or in provider infrastructure.
